It's amazing what a thunderstorm and a surge can do. If you haven't noticed, the website is no longer being hosted on an Amiga. This because one day I had another power surge and almost got my Amiga fried. It was then that I realized that I would much rather have some cheap Linux box fried than one of my Amigas, which would be much harder to replace. So now the Amiga is a client machine and the one I do my html editing on, but is not the server anymore.
Old News
As you may have noticed, zcrew.org is not where it used to be. In fact, if you're in this section this news will be of interest to you. Zcrew.org is now hosting over my DSL connection on my Amiga 3000! My setup is an Amiga 3000 with X-Surf ethernet connected to my firewall, 68030/16, 10 MB of RAM, a 50 MB SCSI HD, and a 100 MB SCSI HD. Software wise I'm running OS 3.9, Miami 3 for networking, A-Rexx Web Server, qpopper, qmail, and ftpd. I will eventually post a full guide on how to set all the networking goodies up so you don't have to wade through the muck of the internet to find what you need.
Well, I went to update the Amiga Destination today and realized it's really been a year since I last updated it. Sorry about that fellow Amiga users. No major news to report besides that OS3.9 is out and if you haven't already gotten 3.5, OS3.9 is definately worth the jump. I just installed it last week and love it.
Info
I've been using Amiga's since 1990. I still use them because they still multitask better than any other computer out there, they are still more efficient, and most importantly, they are still fun! Currently I have an Amiga 500, 1000, CDTV, 3000, 4000, 1200, and CD32.
I hope this page will become a repository of fun and useful Amiga information, and I hope to share my upcoming adventures with adding my Amiga 3000 to my home network. Heck, I may even ask for help here. If you have any questions about Amiga, go ahead and ask me. I may not have an answer for you, but I'll try to help. If you would like a link to your Amiga page put here, then let me know and I'll gladly help you out.
I finally upgraded my A3000 some more with OS3.9 with 3.1 ROMS and the X-Surf Ethernet and IDE controller. First task was to install the hardware which I did fairly easily, except for the ROM tower which took a few tries to align correctly. After that, I had to copy the IDE drivers from the CD-ROM on my Windoze machine to floppy and bring them over to my 3000 still running 3.1 OS. After discovering that PC formatted disks hate Amiga files, I recopied the drivers while compressed by lha. This worked great and my CD-ROM was off and running.
After getting the CD going, I popped in my OS3.9 cd and created a emergency disk to do a full OS3.9 install. I then copied the IDE drivers to the floppy and added "binddrivers" to the startup-sequence so that my IDE CD-ROM would be recognized while booting off of a floppy. I cleared my hard drive so I could do a fresh install and booted off the emergency disk. It booted up using the Picasso 96 display off the floppy, very cool. From there the OS3.9 install went like a snap. After getting OS3.9 and the internet software including Genesis installed, I then proceeded to install the X-Surf software and it went smoothly. I inputed the appropriate IP addresses and it integrated with Genesis seemlessly. Now my A3000 is happily using my DSL connection on my home network.
Next up is getting Samba set up for file sharing, and installing the new PPC/060 accelerator I just ordered! I'm also getting an ethernet card for my A1200 so I'll be wiring that to DSL soon as well.
